Mexican citizenship test: what's on it
The Mexican naturalization process includes two tests run by Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE): a history and culture exam of 10 multiple-choice questions in Spanish, where you need at least 8 correct within 10 minutes, and a Spanish language test worth 6 points, where you need at least 5. You get two attempts at the history and culture exam, and the second is after 15 business days.
| Test | Format | Pass mark | Time and attempts |
|---|---|---|---|
| History and culture | 10 multiple-choice questions, in Spanish | At least 8 correct | Up to 10 minutes. Two attempts; the second after 15 business days |
| Spanish language | Short interview, reading comprehension and a writing exercise | At least 5 of 6 points | Not specified in the sources we use |
Who has to take the history and culture exam?
Most people applying for naturalization. According to the SRE, minors, refugees and people with complementary protection only need to prove Spanish. Check your own case on the official SRE site before your appointment, because requirements depend on your situation.
Is the exam in Spanish?
Yes. The history and culture questions are asked in Spanish, so practicing in Spanish matters. Translations of study questions help you understand a topic, but they are not what you will see on the day.
Where do the questions come from?
There is no public official question bank. The SRE publishes a study guide with a bibliography; the main book is Nueva historia mínima de México by El Colegio de México. Applicants also report questions in the press, forums and groups, so you will find reported questions, but those reports are not official.
What if you fail?
You can take the history and culture exam a second time after 15 business days. The SRE explains what happens if you do not pass on its official page (linked below).
